It was one of the best days of his life for this Kennedy Center client who has an intellectual disability. When Michael Donahue, 29, approached the podium to receive his personalized t-shirt of calendar artwork from Philip R. Sherringham, President and CEO of People’s United Bank, and Martin D. Schwartz, President and CEO of The Kennedy Center, the room erupted into loud, thunderous applause.  The biggest cheers came from his eight family members who attended The Kennedy Center’s Annual Calendar Reception, hosted at People’s United Bank headquarters in Bridgeport, the major sponsor.

For Michael, the recognition was equivalent to receiving a Grammy award.  For the first time ever, his artwork had been chosen for inclusion in the Center’s “Unique Perspective” calendar. More importantly, his painting, “Estuary” graced the cover of this popular calendar that is oftentimes sent to family and friends from around the country and world.

The entire Donahue family has always supported Michael as he explored new outlets for expression and continually challenged himself.  Like an athlete preparing for competition, Michael had taken all the necessary steps to become an accomplished artist.

“Michael enrolled in the Kennedy Center’s art therapy program over three years ago,” explained his mother Moreen.  “He had just lost all his grandparents and the family thought this program would help him through the grieving process. Michael thrived in the program. This past year, with the help of The Kennedy Center staff and the Department of Developmental Services, (previously the Department of Mental Retardation), he was encouraged to enroll in a college-level art class at Fairfield University where he expanded his artistic ability. Michael’s dream to enter college came true.”
