It’s always nice to move from one season to the next. Particular to our enjoyment of stepping from summer into autumn are the welcoming light winds, crisp days, cool nights, changing colors, and the aromas in and out of the home that are distinct to this glorious season. It is such a joy to get out and enjoy a fragrant autumn breeze and witness the brilliant colors of the changing seasons. You can further enjoy the relatively short, beautiful season of autumn by bringing the colors and scents of autumn into the home.

Autumn wreaths and sprays are particularly eye catching. Wreaths and sprays can be hung over the fireplace, on or above doors and windows, or on walls. You can make the wreaths and sprays yourself with dried leaves, tiny gourds and pumpkins and dried flowers attached to grapevine wreaths or sprays; or you can purchase ready-made wreaths and sprays decorated with a variety of autumn accents.
Baskets filled with tiny gourds and pumpkins, dried leaves and small pinecones can be placed in strategic places around a room. They can be placed by the front door, at the foot of a staircase, at the end of a hallway, next to the fireplace (well away from the pit), under a sofa table or end table, on the platform of a bay or bow window – virtually any place they won’t be tripped over.
Candles can not only display autumn colors throughout the home, but they can provide delicious scents of the season. They can be placed on mantles, dining tables and accent tables around the room. Candles come in all the colors of autumn ~ orange, tan, brown, deep red, yellow, cream and gold. They can also be found in a nice assortment of seasonal fragrances that include pumpkin pie, cinnamon, ginger, woody-spices, fresh apples, vanilla, autumn leaves, apple pie ~ the list goes on and on. If you place enough candles of different and complimentary scents around a room, the fragrances will fill the space without even having to light the candles.
Tables around the room and the dining room table look especially seasonal when decorated with accessories that are splashed with autumn colors. You can create lovely autumn arrangements of fresh, dried or silk flowers, tiny gourds and pumpkins, and pillar or taper candles.
Small bowls can be filled with mixed nuts and placed on coffee tables and end tables, alone or in front of some of your pillar candles. Larger bowls or baskets filled with fresh apples and pears look particularly lovely on the dining room server.
However you decide to decorate your home for autumn, the colors and scents specific to the season will offer added pleasure of this relatively short, beautiful season. Whether simple or elegant in design, the seasonal decoration will provide the perfect transition when stepping from summer into autumn.
